Think about your current life and how much of it is spent in front of a computer, TV, phone, tablet, or other device. Do you notice yourself having more stress, anger, anxiety and depression? Put your phone down, turn your TV off and get outside. Live in the moment and appreciate the simple beauty of nature.

Makes You Happier

There have been many studies that state just walking in nature for 20 minutes can improve your overall mood. Your mood, in turn, has a direct link to your energy levels. If you are always wound up and stressed, chances are basic tasks feel like a struggle. Get outside, clear your mind and recharge!

Easy Way to Get Your Daily Exercise

My wife is just getting back into working out. It's hard to jump right into workout programs and fitness classes. Start off easy by taking a walk, going for a short hike or taking your kids to the park. Don't overdo it.

One of the first steps to improving your health is setting small obtainable goals and staying consistent. My wife and I purchased Fitbits and set easy goals of 10,000 steps and 20 stairs to climb each day. As soon as she gets home from work, we go outside and make sure to get our steps in for the day.

Reduces Anxiety

Exercising outdoors and taking in the sunlight helps reduce anxiety. It's early 2021 – we could all use a little less anxiety in our lives. Many of us are stuck inside with our phones and

TVs constantly reminding us of the chaos in the world. I'm guilty of it...my phone is always going off with notifications. I don't believe we were meant to constantly see the troubles of everyone else, so put that phone down, or at least turn off your ringer.

Exercising outside gives you a feeling of success and releases endorphins which will improve your mood. Sunlight keeps your serotonin levels up. This will improve your mood and energy.

Provides Vitamin D

Vitamin D is important for many reasons. It will help strengthen your blood cells and bones and even help improve your immune system. We also need vitamin D to help our bodies absorb calcium and phosphorus. And all it takes is being outside – the sun allows our bodies to make what we need!

Bonus: Bring a Friend

Many of us are still in some stage of lockdown. We need people to socialize with. It's not the same, talking with your friends and family over text. Going on a hike and talking with someone in person is great for your mental health. It's a way to get things off your chest and realize you are not going through these difficult times alone.

Having a friend or family member to go on walks with is also beneficial to staying consistent. It's like having an accountability coach...it's easier to cancel on yourself than to cancel on someone else.

I invite you to do your own research to see the full benefits of being outside. Grab a friend, set a date, choose a path and make it happen. Remember to set little goals to obtain bigger goals and you’ll be well on your way to improving your health.
